Writing The Essay Format of an English Essay

in Style

The steps or procedures on how to plan and write the essay format of an academic English essay would be the same steps that are used for the formatting of other academic essays on specific subject areas. The university or college students who would write English essays should take note that essays for the higher education level would usually adhere to an essay formatting that is based on the style guide or style manual that is specified by the lecturer. A style guide is a set of written standards to be followed for the writing and design of academic documents such as essays.

A university or college student who is new and not familiar in writing an English essay should first ready, study and learn about the particular essay format requirements that are written in the style guide that would be specified by his lecturer. Various universities and colleges in the United States, and other English speaking countries would usually follow the same and common style guides that are applicable for the undergraduate courses that are taken up by the students.

Since an English essay could fall under the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, the most common style guides for those disciplines are: A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses and Dissertations (Turabian style); MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (MLA style); Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA style); and the AMA Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors (AMA style).  The student should take note that the essay format requirements for an essay document paper of a particular style guide would not necessarily be the same as the other style guides.

Therefore, it is important that the student should read, study and learn the steps or procedures in formatting an English essay or for any other essays on specific subject areas. For example, there are several differences in the comparisons of formatting of the APA and MLA styles. For the formatting of the font style and size, the MLA style would require the Times New Roman font that is set to 12 point font. But the APA style would require either the Times New Roman font or the Ariel font, and both of them would be set to the 12 point font.

But paper margins for the APA and MLA styles would be different. The APA style requires a paper margin of 1.25 inch for the left and right sides, and one inch for the top and bottom portions. The MLA style requires a one inch margin for the left and right sides, and the top and bottom portions of the paper. But both the APA and MLA styles would require double spacing between the paragraphs for the entire document.
